Societi is the UK Foundation for Kawasaki Disease, the leading cause of acquired heart disease in UK children. Delayed treatment of Kawasaki Disease is shown to greatly increase the risk of heart damage in affected children. Poor levels of awareness throughout public and clinical environments contribute significantly to these delays in treatment. Kawasaki Disease is more common than some forms of bacterial meningitis and is a more common reason for children to be hospitalised than measles. Despite being similar in the severity of its outcomes to these well-known childhood diseases, Kawasaki Disease is by comparison, little known.
Societi works to raise the profile of Kawasaki Disease in the UK. We focus on awareness raising, improving clinical supervision for children affected, enabling research and supporting affected families, providing trusted and reliable information. The donation made to Societi by Movement for Good will allow us to produce a children’s story book for families affected by Kawasaki Disease so that parents can more easily explain to their child and their siblings about Kawasaki Disease in a context that is relevant to them. The donation will allow Societi to print and distribute 200 copies of the book to families and to our partner hospitals throughout the UK.
